PCB Local Lingo

Here is a quick guide on PCB Local Lingo and how to talk like you have been living in Bay County your whole life. You will hear terms daily that only make sense if you live in the area. And a little tip: never call the water at the beach the ocean. The Florida panhandle sits on the Gulf of Mexico. This is a big pet peeve with locals. It’s the gulf – not the ocean.

Where are you?

The PCB local lingo can be a bit confusing to some people when describing locations. For example, if someone says, “I live on the beach,” it does not mean they own a house on the sand. They are saying they live in Panama City Beach. If someone else says, “I live in town,” they live in Panama City.

FYI: Panama City and Panama City Beach are two different cities.

“Going over the bridge” usually refers to the Hathaway Bridge that connects Panama City and Panama City Beach.

“Let’s go to the island this weekend!” Pack your snacks and sunscreen! You have a great friend taking you out to Shell Island.

30A is a stretch of approximately 20 miles of coastal road along the shoreline between Destin and Panama City Beach.

Pier Park is a popular outdoor mall and epicenter of all cultural activity that includes plenty of options for food, fun, and shopping.

East vs West

  • West End is the area of Panama City Beach that is west of Hwy 79.
  • East End is the area of Panama City Beach that is east of Pier Park.

Roads

  • Front Beach Road is… well… the road that runs in front of the beach.
  • Back Beach Road is Highway 98, also known as Panama City Beach Parkway.
  • Middle Beach Road is Hutchinson Blvd. It’s the road that runs in between Front Beach Road and Back Beach Road.

What’s Going On?

  • Bike Week – Twice a year, our motorcycle-loving friends visit for a week to enjoy special events catered just for them.  Look twice – save a life!!
  • Gulf Coast Jam – Country’s biggest music festival held in June at Frank Brown Park. It’s a blast for locals and tourists alike.

Other

  • Red Flag Day means double red flags are flying on the beach, and the water is closed to swimmers.
  • “Those trees got taken out by the storm” – anytime anyone says “the storm” it’s usually referring to Hurricane Michael – a category 5 hurricane that hit Florida in October 2018.
  • “Turn day” is the day the condos have renters coming in and leaving, usually on Saturday.  This is often the only time to view condos, especially during the busy seasons.
  • Snowbirds are our friends that live in the area during the winter months. They usually fly down from northern states and Canada.
