Fall Homeowner Checklist

It’s Fall, Y’all!! Here’s a Fall Homeowner Checklist to make sure you prepare your home for cooler (in theory) nights. Plus, if you want to sell your home anywhere in the future, the next homeowner will thank you.

Autumn in Panama City Beach looks different compared to other parts of the country. Our fall is usually chilly mornings followed by a hot afternoon then a comfy evening. If you are not from the South, when we say “chilly,” we mean high 60 degrees. But we still love this time of year mainly because it’s football season. Celebrate fall with carved pumpkins and an easy, low-cost Fall Homeowner Checklist.

Replace Weather Stripping and Thresholds. Keep the cold air outside and replace all the worn-out weather stripping. This will also help save on energy costs.

Replace Batters in Smoke Detector. A good rule of thumb is to replace the batteries when the time changes. Add to the list CO detectors, ring doorbells, and anything similar.

Seed and Weed Lawn. With summer ending, the time for cutting your grass every weekend is also ending. Take the time to seed and weed your lawn to protect it from cooler weather.

Get Heater and AC Serviced. Most AC companies provide a maintenance service for members at a decent cost. This is definitely something to look into as it can save you tons of time, money, and heartache in the future. There is nothing worse than the heater not working when the first cold snap hits or the AC breaking down on a hot day.

Seal Outdoor Surfaces. Protect your porches, decks, fences, and more with a good outdoor sealer. You will thank yourself for doing this so you can postpone replacing some worn-out boards.

Wash Outdoor Furniture. Rent a pressure washer or use a magic eraser to wash all the summer fun off. You will be surprised what a difference it makes.

Clean Dryer Vents. There are over 2,900 home fires reported due to dryers each year according to the US Fire Administration. This leads to a yearly average of 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and over $35 million dollars worth of damage. Also, add the filters for the washing machine and the dishwasher to the to-do list because of “ewe gross.”

Visit the Pumpkin Patch! It’s fall!! Have some fun!! Find a local pumpkin patch or corn maze. Decorate the front porch with pumpkins. Watch the Disney version of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Or cheer for your favorite football team. Make time for fun this season!

Bonus Tip: Start Saving for Christmas Gifts if you haven’t already. Christmas is right around the corner. Cut out some of the stress by saving and shopping early. Explore your local farmer’s markets and small businesses for a unique gift.
