3 Steps to Get Your Home Ready to Sell
The Got Beach Team at Beachy Beach Real Estate would like to share 3 steps to get your home ready to sell. These are 3 simple, universal steps, but the costs and time depend on the property. We want to provide you with the tools to get started as soon as you are ready.
Step 1: Declutter
The first thing you will need to get your home ready to sell is a box. A lot of boxes actually. Label the boxes with four categories: Donate, Sell, Trash, or Next House. Walk through your entire home gathering items room by room.
Break it into small bites. One shelf, one drawer, one corner, one room at a time. You will be moving soon anyways so this is a great chance to get a jumpstart on packing before the move. This step can be overwhelming for some people so start as soon as possible.
Start with the easy things. What are the items you definitely want to take to the next house, but they are not things you use every day? Think about your great-grandmother’s China dishes, family pictures, books, and any collections.
The next part is not easy, but it is very satisfying. Take anything unused, broken, or unwanted. Decide if each item needs to be sold, donated, or trashed. Schedule a yard sale or a charity pickup. Declutter all drawers, cabinets, and closets. Yes, buyers will look. Tip: turn on The Home Edit on Netflix for inspiration.
Step 2: Depersonalize
Potential buyers want to walk through your home and picture it as their home. They are there to see the floor plan, the features, the actual property. They do not want to see your limited edition Elvis Presley dinner plates or your awesome Barbie collection. Take down all the magnets off your refrigerator. Go ahead and pack away the family photos for the next house and replace with art or plants. Get the kids’ toys down to a minimum so they are easy to tidy up before showings. Focus on the living room, kitchen, and primary bedroom.
A fresh coat of paint goes a long way before putting your home on the market. Choose a great neutral color instead of a bold patterned wallpaper. Get rid of pet odors. Hide the pet bowls and litter boxes. Consider buying neutral colored slipcovers for worn-out furniture so it’s not an eyesore.
Go ahead and make as many repairs as possible. Hire a professional handyman if you are not the handiest person. Replace blown lightbulbs. Fix the broken drawer in the bathroom. Anything broken will only distract potential buyers so be proactive on this.
Step 3: Decide
